Description

This cozy donut-inspired loaf brings all the charm of a classic sugar-dusted donut, but in quick-bread form. Each slice is incredibly soft, lightly sweet, and finished with a warm spiced sugar coating that makes it impossible to stop at just one piece. It’s a perfect treat for slow mornings, brunch spreads, or anytime you’re in the mood for a homemade sweet bite without the fuss.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread

  • 2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups (300 g) granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 ¼ cups (306 g) whole milk
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Spiced Sugar Topping

  • ¼ cup (57 g) unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and lightly grease an 8.5 × 4.5-inch loaf pan with nonstick spray.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix the milk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla until they come together smoothly.
  4. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir just until the batter is combined—keep it light to avoid a dense loaf. The batter will be thin.
  5. Transfer the batter to the prepared pan and spread it out evenly.
  6. Bake for 60–70 minutes, or until the top is golden and a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out with only a few moist crumbs.
  7. Let the loaf rest in the pan for about 10 minutes before lifting it out and placing it on parchment paper.
  8. While the bread is still warm, brush the entire surface with the melted butter for the coating.
  9. Mix the sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a small bowl, then generously sprinkle the mixture over the buttered loaf, turning it to cover every side. (Any extra topping can be stored for another use.)
